DAYS
DAYS is a vibrant pattern design project inspired by a local contest in Deep Cove, North Vancouver. Though it was never submitted, this piece became a happy accident, blending my love for lifestyle illustration and character design. The project incorporates everyday objects like a bed, alarm clock, toothbrush, stapler, and a tap dispenser, alongside whimsical characters such as Pepo, an eggplant figure I created during my time at Emily Carr University of Art and Design. Pepo represents growth, imagination, a playful narrative, influenced by Takashi Murakami’s bold colours and iconic characters.
Objective
To create a playful and dynamic pattern inspired by Deep Cove’s natural beauty, infused with elements of pop culture and everyday life.
Process
Research & Reference:
I visited Deep Cove, taking photos of the natural surroundings to inspire my designs.
Concept Development:
Incorporated plants from Deep Cove to symbolize growth.
Designed lifestyle objects and Pepo (reference: character on top of the stapler), the eggplant, as central element aside from the other named characters.
Tools & Techniques:
Pencil sketches refined and digitalized using a scanner.
Final artwork created in Adobe Illustrator.
Mockups:
Applied the pattern design to lifestyle products, including a tote bag and t-shirt, to envision it’s practical use.
Visual Elements
Main Pattern: A seamless design featuring plants, object, and characters.
Mockups: Showcasing the design on a tote bag, t-shirt to highlight its versatility.
Reflection
DAYS celebrates creativity, growth, and the everyday moments that make life colorful. It’s a project that bridges imagination and reality, giving a new life to objects and characters through bold patterns.
